# Notifications and mail

> Set up SMTP in FeatherPanel, edit the HTML mail templates, send a test or mass e-mail, and post announcements or targeted warnings to users and servers.

## SMTP

Set these in Settings, under the Email category:

| Setting | Default | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `smtp_enabled` | false | Turns e-mail on. |
| `smtp_host`, `smtp_port` | localhost, 587 | Your mail server. |
| `smtp_encryption` | starttls | `starttls` or `tls` for port 587, `ssl` for port 465, `none` for plain SMTP. |
| `smtp_user`, `smtp_pass` | | Login. The password is stored encrypted. |
| `smtp_from` | noreply@featherpanel.com | Sender address. |

Save, then use Send Test Email. The panel puts mail in a queue and the
[async runner](https://featherpanel.com/docs/panel/cron-and-workers) sends it, so a test that never arrives usually means the runner is down
or the SMTP details are wrong.

## Mail templates

Mail Templates lists the HTML templates the panel sends. Each has a name, subject and HTML body with an editor and a
live preview. Built-in templates include:

| `account_created`, `verify_email`, `forgot_password`, `email_login_code` | Sign-up, verification, password reset, e-mail code login. |
| `account_suspended`, `account_unsuspended`, `account_deleted`, `account_deletion_otp`, `account_deletion_scheduled` | Bans and account deletion. |
| `server_created`, `server_deleted`, `server_suspended`, `server_unsuspended` | Server lifecycle. |
| `vm_suspended`, `vm_unsuspended` | VDS suspension. |
| `ticket_replied`, `ticket_closed`, `ticket_reopened`, `ticket_admin_alert` | [Support tickets](https://featherpanel.com/docs/admin/support). |
| `user_warning` | A targeted notification with e-mail. |
| `api_client_ip_blocked` | A request with an API key came from an IP outside the key's allowed list (if the key owner turned the alert on). |

Placeholders are written in single braces, for example `{app_name}`, `{app_url}`, `{first_name}`, `{username}`,
`{dashboard_url}` and `{support_url}`. The available set depends on the template.

### Mass e-mail

Send Mass Email sends one HTML mail to every user with a valid address. Test it first and make sure your privacy policy
and terms allow bulk mail.

## Announcements and warnings

Notifications shows banners in the panel. Create one with:

- **Title**, **type** (Info, Warning, Danger) and a **Markdown message**.
- **Audience:** Everyone, a specific user, or a specific server. Global ones show on the dashboard and server pages;
  targeted ones only for that owner.
- **Also email the targeted user** for user warnings.
- **Allow users to dismiss** and **Sticky** (always visible).

## Frequently asked questions

### Why are no e-mails sent?

Check that smtp_enabled is true, the SMTP host, port and encryption match your provider, and the async runner is running. Mail is queued by the panel and delivered by the runner.

### Can I change the text of the welcome or password reset mail?

Yes. Edit the template in Mail Templates. Placeholders such as {username} and {app_url} are filled in when the mail is sent.

### Can I warn one user about their server?

Create a notification with the audience Specific user, pick the server, and tick Also email the targeted user.
