# File manager

> Manage server files in FeatherPanel. Upload folders, edit in the browser or VS Code, handle archives, pull from a URL, share links and restore from trash.

The file manager needs `file.read`. Creating, editing, deleting and archiving need `file.create`, `file.update`,
`file.delete` and `file.archive`. Reading file contents needs `file.read-content`.

## Browsing

- List or grid view, and show or hide dotfiles.
- **Quick access** keeps pinned folders and recent files.
- **Search Files** finds names; **Advanced Filters** add content search (plain text, optional case-insensitive), include
and exclude glob patterns, a size range and a maximum size for content scanning.
- **Ignored Content** hides paths from your own view only. It never deletes anything.
- The info sheet for a file shows size, type, MIME type, owner, permissions and dates, and can compute a checksum.

## Uploading and creating

Drop files or folders anywhere on the page, or use Upload files and Upload folder(s). New File and New Folder create
items in the current folder. **Pull** downloads a file from a URL straight to the server, with an optional file name.

## Editing

Open a text file to edit it in the browser. **Open in IDE** gives a fuller editor. **Open in VS Code** opens the
server's files and console in VS Code or VSCodium through the Calagopus extension, which you install first from the
Visual Studio Marketplace or Open VSX.

## Actions

| Action | Notes |
| --- | --- |
| Rename, Move, Copy, Duplicate | Duplicates get a `- copy` suffix. Drag items onto a folder or breadcrumb to move them. |
| Compress | Pick an archive type and an optional name. |
| Extract, Browse archive | Extract here, to the root or into a folder, or look inside first. |
| Permissions | Set an octal mode such as `644`. |
| Download, Download folder | Folder downloads depend on the node's support. |
| Share | Uploads the file as a temporary public link that expires after 1 or 5 days, with an optional download password and a delete key. Save the delete key, it is shown once. |
| Copy or move to another server | Packs the selection and unpacks it on another server you own. |
| Wipe All | Deletes every file on the server. |

## Trash

When the host turns on `file_trash_enabled`, Delete moves files to Trash instead. Restore puts them back, with an option
to replace a file the server recreated. The host sets how long items stay (`file_trash_retention_days`, default 30)
and the size cap (`file_trash_max_size_mb`, default 512 MB); the oldest items go first when the cap is hit.

## SFTP

The server's [Settings](https://featherpanel.com/docs/user/servers/startup-and-settings#settings) page lists the SFTP host, port, username and a
direct `sftp://` link. Log in with your panel password. SFTP access needs `file.sftp`.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I connect with SFTP?

Open the server's Settings page. SFTP Details shows the host, port and username. Log in with your panel account password in a client such as FileZilla or WinSCP.

### Can I get deleted files back?

If your host turned on the trash bin, deleted files go to Trash and can be restored from there until they expire or the trash is full.

### Can I copy files to another of my servers?

Yes. Select files and choose Copy or move to another server. They are packed, sent and unpacked on the target server.
